"When my alarm went off I felt like the sequence was wrong. I felt (for some reason) that I should have heard several other rings before that ring. I believed it so strongly that I didn't get up right away, just laid there waiting for the right sequence of rings to occur...10 minutes later I finally got up." Dick Mulhern

Liz and I were in a car driving into a city. As we enter the outskirts of the city we encountered very small and crudely built structures that housed families. It was hard to tell if the structures had doors or windows as the sides were covered with plastic, odd pieces of wood or tin. Everything was the same brown-gray color and the people in the houses were dressed very poorly.

As we progressed further into the city the structures got bigger but they were still very crudely built.

NOTE: Five years ago I was in Katmandu, Nepal and it reminded me of some of the streets I had seen there and in New Deli, India.

We continued to drive into the city and I began to notice a change in the structures. Although they weren't the finest built house they were much better then the structures we had originally encountered. You could tell where to enter the house and the structures had windows. The houses were not real colorful but looked somewhat comfortable to live in. I couldn't see any people in the house like the structures before. The house didn't get a lot nicer as we drove but there seemed to be more space between houses.

Suddenly we left the housing area and started up a ridge. The landscape was very green with lots of leafy trees. We finally reached the summit of the ridge and then dropped over to the other side. The sun was shinning brightly and we saw beautifully ornate buildings that seemed to be 100's of years old but in perfect shape. We continued driving and got to the center of the city and each structure was more beautiful and elaborate then the next. We finally stopped at the edge of the water next to a long walkway into the water. I noticed an American flag flying on a pole near one of the buildings and I remember thinking, "This is typical. The Americans live in this luxury in this foreign country and the residents live in shacks or at best mediocre housing." I know I felt uncomfortable with the drastic difference between the outskirts of town and the section we were currently in. I said to Liz, "This is the part of Geneva that you so often see pictures of. You don't ever see pictures of the outskirts of the city."

We joined up with some friends and we toured the city together. It was beautiful but the outskirts of town were constantly on my mind. The ridge separated the two parts of town and because it was over the ridge, no one thought about it to much. The people we were touring with were fun and I seem to forget the outskirts of town.
